How to Save a City: Building Mental Armor

Friday, November 12, 2021 @ 1:30 pm 2:30 pm

Empower Fort Worth was established in 2019, as an effort to combat the stigma associated with seeking help from burnout, stress, and compassion fatigue. Why does it matter? Physicians have the highest suicide rate of any profession. Police live 22 years less than the general population. 28% of all lawyers are clinically depressed.

Pillars from this group came together to promote resources within the community and combat stigma attached with seeking help. Also, we want to build resilience – not only with us but ultimately the broader community. Before the pandemic, one out of eight high school kids attempt suicide. We can solve this by being proactive with resources.

How do we build resilience? First Responders, Lawyers, and Physicians experience having a bad day. To deal with the constant barrage of negativity and secondary trauma, we build an armor. However, while these professions are first to help others, they are the last to help themselves.
